Joseph A. Smith (1895-1978) was an avid collector of railroad photos, sharing many of them with fellow collectors in the Northeast. A former plumbing contractor, he presumably developed his interest in railroads through his father James H. Smith, a trolley motorman in Troy, NY. His extensive collection focused on the lines that once served Troy: Delaware & Hudson, Rutland, Boston & Maine and New York Central.

Delaware & Northern Railroad Steam Locomotive #10 at Margaretville, New York
![]() |
ID 11,406 |
From Burr Hubbell
Picture was taken by shop doors at Margaretville, NY. Engine is facing south. According to Best, (p204) Number 10 was built by Lima, Builder's Number 1108, February 1910, 56 inch drivers, 19x26 inch cylinders, 138000 lbs.,
Ex Emporia Mfg. Co. No. 10, acquired BR&L Co., 1-3-30. Scrapped by D&N, no date given.
Best's notes aren't the clearest - not sure whether acquired BR&L refers to date of D&N's acquisition from them, or BR&L's acquisition from Emporia.
