Joseph A. Smith (1895-1978) was an avid collector of railroad photos, sharing many of them with fellow collectors in the Northeast. A former plumbing contractor, he presumably developed his interest in railroads through his father James H. Smith, a trolley motorman in Troy, NY. His extensive collection focused on the lines that once served Troy: Delaware & Hudson, Rutland, Boston & Maine and New York Central.

Rt. 31, South Elgin, Illinois
Car 441 has just passed under the Illinois Central Railroad bridge at Coleman, Illinois, on the Fox River Line. A ten-bench summer car of Brill design, it was assembled in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, in 1908 and operated there until 1965. The car is similar to thousands which operated throughout the United States in the early 1900's. It is now operated by RELIC between South Elgin and Coleman on Sundays and holidays, May 30 through October 31.
