Joseph A. Smith (1895-1978) was an avid collector of railroad photos, sharing many of them with fellow collectors in the Northeast. A former plumbing contractor, he presumably developed his interest in railroads through his father James H. Smith, a trolley motorman in Troy, NY. His extensive collection focused on the lines that once served Troy: Delaware & Hudson, Rutland, Boston & Maine and New York Central.

Penn Central Diesel Locomotive #2674 at Kingston, New York on May 8, 1978
this unit I first saw in New London,Connecticut leading a long westbound shoreline freight.... it was the summer of '69 and the unit had her Penn Central road number but was still dressed for the New Haven... a few years later I came across the Locomotive Card for 2674 while walking those same tracks.... still have it as a keepsake with locations marked Dover, Worcester, Maybrook, and New London. Cool.
